Packaging Levels

Fight hoarding with an effective inventory management tool.

Assembly and manufacturing workers should focus on performing their tasks, not counting components. We will work with your engineering and purchasing professionals to determine appropriate packaging levels that prevent hoarding and cross-contamination of parts in your bins.

Packaging Levels Prevent Hoarding

One goal of a good VMI program is to eliminate waste. Many manufacturers lose control over inventory when workers take more parts than are needed. "Hoarding" often takes place because of a number of factors, including:

  • Parts stored (or dumped) in bins loosely
  • Parts are very small and hard to remove in precise quantity
  • Workers see that supplies are low and want to take "enough to last"

A principle method of addressing this is the use of packaging levels. When parts are stored in bins loosely, workers feel free to take whatever quantity they find most convenient. Additionally, when workers are in a hurry, parts are spilled from one bin into another. Good VMI programs don't let this happen, and package certain materials into preset levels. This leads to less waste, more accurate inventory visibility, and increased efficiency.

BAD
Before Allied Fasteners, small parts are stored in these bins loosely. Workers can horde materials, and small size leads to contamination of parts from one bin to another.

GOOD
Parts are packaged by Allied Fasteners into appropriately-sized bags, and are labeled per manufacturer's requirements (quantity, part information, and barcode).
